README
On GitHubYu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories Recompiled
Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories (PS1, USA) rebuilt from its decompiled source as a native PC game for Windows and Linux. Bring your own disc image; no game data is included but the text of the European translations (below).

Features
- Up to 4x internal resolution, widescreen and HD text
- 3D Monsters: face-up monsters stand on the field as their battle models
- Optional Forbidden Memories HD pack: redrawn cards, frames and portraits
- Mods: framework for new cards past the original 722, fusions, textures, music, gameplay tables
- Save slots, fusion helper, card drop rates, rebindable controls
- Game > Language: the European releases' own English, French, German, Italian and Spanish

Play
Download the latest build from Releases, extract it and run memories-pc.exe (Windows) or ./memories-pc (Linux). On first launch, pick your USA disc's .bin. The game can tell you when a newer release is out (Help > Check for updates at start turns it off; see Updates).
HD pack
- From the same release, download
yfm-redecomp-hd-mod-.zip. - Close the game and extract the zip into the game folder, the one with
memories-pc.exeor
memories-pc. You should end up withmods/assets-hdbeside the other mods. - Start the game. The pack is on by default: press F10 for the menu bar and open
Game > Mods to check it, or to turn it or any of its parts off.
- For the best look, pick Video > Resolution > Internal 4x and turn on Video > HD text.
From source: put the .bin in game/ and run play.bat or ./play.sh. The first run builds everything (Linux needs gcc and python3). See PC build.
Languages: languages/*.txt is the text of the five European releases, read off the PAL discs by the port itself. With the discs in game/pal, python3 tools/pc/export_languages.py writes them again, and --check compares them (Translations, "The official languages"). They are the only game data in the repository: text, no pictures.

Release notes
v0.2.0 is the first full release since v0.1.2. It brings in everything from the v0.1.3 and v0.1.4 previews: the European languages, monsters on the attack cards, rebindable shortcuts, and a lot more for mods to change. Existing saves and settings carry over; save states from v0.1.2 or earlier no longer load.
Downloads
- Windows:
yfm-redecomp-v0.2.0-windows.zip, runmemories-pc.exe - Linux:
yfm-redecomp-v0.2.0-linux.tar.gz, run./memories-pc - Forbidden Memories HD (optional, 106 MB):
yfm-redecomp-hd-mod-v0.2.0.zip, extract into the game folder and turn it on in the Mods window
To update, extract into a fresh folder. Existing user-folder saves and settings carry over. A new install asks for your own USA (SLUS-01411)
.bindisc image; no game data is included.Added
- Game > Language: play in the European English, French, German, Italian or Spanish text (no PAL disc needed)
- 3D Monsters: the monsters face off on the big attack cards, and a new Card art style shows a cutout of the card's art instead of the 3D model
- Game > Controls: the shortcuts (save states, speed, fullscreen and more) can be rebound, including to a controller
- New options: card passwords, the live POW/TEC rank, owned cards in Free Duel, every card in the Library, Japanese button layout, Game > Restart game and a cheats menu
- Quitting asks first, Help > System info for bug reports, and a notice when a new version is out
- Credits and unmodified duel effects now run as native code
- Mods can now sell booster packs on the Password screen, change the title screen and main menus, raise or lower the game's limits, rename and add guardian stars, add rituals for their own cards, edit the campaign map, and switch fusions, equips and rituals on or off from their settings. Mods can also define weighted starter-card pools, including their added cards; explicit starter decks still take priority (#241). Mods made for v0.1.2 still work
Fixed
- The game no longer crashes on Windows PCs with DEP turned off
- Saves from an old folder beside the game are copied into Documents, and a failed save says where and why
- A single tap no longer moves the cursor twice, and text that doesn't fit its box no longer freezes the game
- 3D Monsters no longer crashes on Raigeki, and duels stay smooth at 4x internal resolution
- The picture no longer shakes with nearest filtering at non-whole scales
- The CPU, the fusion helper and traps now use a mod's replaced cards as the mod wrote them
- Mods load from folders with accented names, and a refused mod says why
- The Password screen shows its digits again with mods imported from the FM Editor, on both Windows and Linux
- Card replacements and added cards now follow the load order selected in the Mods window (#240)
- Loading a save state restores the game’s random seed, preserving subsequent pack draws, deck shuffles and CPU decisions (#242)
Forbidden Memories HD (optional)
- HD campaign portraits, new art for some cards and the attribute balls
- Smoother letters and digits, and the life point panel stays HD on the opponent's turn

.bindisc image; no game data is included.Fixes
- Fixed a crash when winning a duel with Exodia on some systems.
- Applying a large texture pack no longer hangs.
Modding
- A card mod's
"replace"can now change a card's type across monster/non-monster: an equip, magic, trap or ritual card can become a monster, and a monster can become one of those. A card that becomes a monster fights without a 3D model unless"model"names a monster to borrow one from."effect"gives a replaced card another card's effect. - A replaced Exodia piece is now an ordinary card: three per deck, and it no longer counts toward the Exodia win. Add
"exodia": trueto keep both rules for a mod that only restyles the pieces. - Cards a mod adds as copies of a replaced card now use the replaced card's borrowed model and effect.
