Questions people ask
Is it legal? Can I get banned? Do I need both games? Why isn't my favourite mod here? Short, honest answers.
Do I need to own both games?
Yes. Passthrough mods run both real games, so both must be installed. Rust rewrites and recomps read files from your own copy. No project listed here includes the games themselves.
Is this legal?
Modding games you own, for yourself, is widely accepted and many publishers welcome it. What gets projects in trouble is sharing the games' files or anything that breaks copy protection, which is why legitimate projects never include them. Publishers can still send takedown notices, and some do. This isn't legal advice: if you're building something big, read the game's modding policy and EULA.
Can I get banned?
In single-player and offline modes, bans aren't a thing. In online games with anti-cheat, injecting code can get your account banned. Never use these mods online. See Staying safe.
Why does it only work with one exact game version?
Mods hook into specific places in a game's code. When the game updates, those places move. Authors have to update their mod for each new version, and some never do. The Works for me reports on each project page show which versions people actually use.
Why does it need so much RAM?
Because two whole games are running. See Will my PC run it?.
Why isn't a mod I know about listed?
The crawler searches GitHub every few hours, and a moderator checks each find before it goes live, so new projects can take a little while. Mods hosted elsewhere (Nexus, CurseForge, Discord) need a person to submit them.
A project's GitHub page disappeared. What happened?
The site checks every tracked repository regularly. If it's gone, the project page says whether it was deleted/made private or taken down after a DMCA notice, and everyone following it gets a notification. Be very careful with "re-uploads" from unknown accounts after a takedown: that's exactly when fake, malware-laden copies appear.
Who makes these mods?
Individual fans, mostly working in public on GitHub, often with AI coding agents doing a lot of the typing. Each project page links to its author. Bugs go to the project's own GitHub issues; questions and setups to the forum here.
Can I request a mashup?
Yes, on the requests board. Vote on what you want; when someone builds it, everyone who voted is notified.
Do I need an account here?
No, browsing and reading work without one. An account (Discord, Steam or GitHub) lets you follow projects for release notifications, post in the forum, vote, submit projects and track which games you own.
